East Yorkshire and Derwent Area Ramblers

Minster Way Ottawa visitors

15th Sept 2026

Walkers completing The Minster Way come from far and wide. An Atlantic dimension is now added by Canadian visitors Roger and Josephine walking the trail from York to Beverley. Below is feedback received from them.

' My partner and I did the trek from York to Beverly using your guide book. We were driven to York and stayed over night at the Moxie hotel. The next morning at 9 am we departed from the Minster.  We had some difficulty after we left the river in turning into the city suburbs and finding the Fulford Golf course, and then later on thru the fields with no signs until we got closer to the Derwent River. More trail signage is needed in some blind spots for sure.

We got as far as Stamford Bridge by 6 pm and we tired.   We took a ride to Bishop Wilton’s to stay overnight at the Fleece Inn (good).  The next day we got to North Dalton and stayed at the Duck Inn (very good).   The next day we diverted half way or so over to Cherry Burton and stayed at the caravan camping place in a yourt tent (fun, good) and observed the solar solstice that evening.  Finally we walked into Beverley the next morning, had coffee at Nero’s in the square and entered the Minster at 10 am.  It was a wonderful experience with very sunny almost hot weather. In Beverley we took the Minster tour up to the top.

A few days later we took the bus back to York.  Because we had done the pilgrimage trail, we got free admission!    Then at 5 am the next morning we caught a train to Manchester for our 9 am flight to home in Ottawa.

We will return to do more walking in the Yorkshire wolds for sure!'

P107005514th June 2020 marked the 40th anniversary of the Minster Way’s opening. Here’s to the next 40 years! Read '40 Years on the Minster Way by Ray Wallis' a brief recollection of how the trail came about.

9th June 2020 - Many stiles, gates and signposts along the route have been refurbished by volunteers from the Beverley and Pocklington Groups of East Yorkshire and Derwent Area Ramblers, in conjunction with East Riding of Yorkshire Council.

The City of York Council has replaced all the stiles along the River Derwent, between Stamford Bridge and Kexby, by metal gates.

Millington - in the interests of safety, a zig-zag path has been installed, this is to alleviate the very steep descent into Sylvan Dale, (see page 22 of guidebook).
