East Yorkshire and Derwent Area Ramblers

walking to protect our local countryside

A few notes from Harry Whitehouse following the Area camping weekend.

Twenty members attended a three-night camp in the Peak District near Edale from 12th  to 15th  June 2015.

In addition to the traditional campers under canvas, three members used caravans, one rented a holiday cottage, another stayed at a B&B, and there was a day visitor.

On Friday afternoon hot sun proved taxing for the 5.5 mile early bird walk up and along Rushup Edge.

Kinder Scout walk

By contrast, very heavy rain on Saturday morning caused the postponement of a planned 11.5 mile Kinder Scout walk. So in the afternoon the group did the 4.5 mile outing to Win Hill, originally planned for Monday morning.

Sunday dawned fine, so Kinder maps were dug out again and after an hour's steady ascent of Grindslow Knoll, the party followed the edge of the plateau to the Downfall, returning via Jacob's Ladder  - a superb day's walking.

On Monday, Saturday's planned double ascent of Mam Tor and Lose Hill was shortened to 8.5 miles for a strenuous final fling.

The summer camp in 2016 will be held in the Dales, provisionally on June 10-13.
